Blue Mountains Base Camp - 12 - 19 February 2027
The Blue Mountains is is famous for its rugged sandstone tablelands, plunging valleys, and the iconic Three Sisters rock formation and many magnificent hikes - these blue hazed mountains are calling.
The intention is to meet at the Katoomba Falls Tourist Park on 12 February at 5.00pm for Happy Hour to discuss the walks and plan the week. I have spoken to NSW Parks regarding the weather and they advised that it could be cool, showery, humid and hot (we know all about it in Victoria).
Day 1 - 13 February - Exploratory, short, warm-up walks of lookouts and waterfalls. Accessible from the caravan park.
Day 2 - 14 February - Grand Cliff Top Track to Sublime Point Nature Reserve - 12kms - moderate. Car shuffle required which will take 40 minutes.
Day 3 - 15 February - Cliff Top Track and Grand Canyon - 12kms - moderate. Starts at Govetts Leap Lookout car park (20 minute drive).
Day 4 - 16 February - Wentworth Pass and Overcliff Track Loop - 6.8kms - hard (15 minute drive)
Day 5 - 17 February - Florabella/Warrimoo to Blaxland - 6kms - moderate. (30 minutes drive - car shuffle required 12 minutes.)
Day 6 - 18 February - Ruined Castle via Furber Steps - 15.1 return - hard. This can be amended - instead of going up the Furber Steps we can take the Scenic Railway. (This walk is optional.)
What to bring:
- Poles
- Wet weather gear
- First Aid kit (I shall be carrying one)
- Snacks, lunch and water
- Sunscreen and hat
- Good humour
Except for day 3 and 5, John and I have done all the walks. The hikes are flexible, as there are so many to choose from.
One evening we shall walk to view the lit-up Three Sisters.

Combined Clubs Event Book Your Accommodation Now! Each year, one of the four larger Gippsland bushwalking clubs takes a turn to arrange a program of combined walks and this year it is our turn. Over the weekend of 24th & 25th October there will be an extensive program of eight walks for participants to choose from with each walk highlighting a different part of the Baw Baw / Walhalla / Erica area. There will also be a special Saturday evening event in the Erica Hotel. Club members intending to participate in this event are strongly encouraged to book their accommodation now as there will be substantial pressure on local venues once registration opens. We have made an arrangement with the Mountain Rivers Tourist Park in Rawson to hold places exclusively for participants until one month before the event. But with demand likely to exceed availability you are strongly encouraged to make your booking now. Have a look at the website https://www.mountainrivers.com.au/ to see the range of accommodation options available then contact them directly by phone on 5165 3231 to make your booking. As external bookings are blocked for the moment, you need to explain that you are a SBWC member booking for the Combined Clubs event and they will make the necessary arrangements. Get in early to ensure that you don’t miss this special event.
