Despite a night of rain and an ominous forecast for a wet day, 20 dedicated walkers assembled at Shelly beach Kilcunda at the designated starting time of 9am. Coats were a no-brainer with various other items also selected to facilitate staying dry.

Soon after our timely departure at 9.15, the rain eased and within ½ hour most coats were shed and hearts were pumping. The ocean was surprisingly calm. However, the slippery track occasionally claimed an unsuspecting victim, marking them unflatteringly but fortunately with no real harm done. Although the sun eluded us the views were still magnificent and by the time the tracked reached our first accessible beach, the group were divided about which direction they were planning to continue walking. Twelve decided to retrace their steps and engage in some social degustation, whilst the other 8 continued along this popular, albeit slippery track, to the lookout near the Punchbowl.

Considering the unstable conditions, we were surprised to encounter a few other walking groups, and some smaller groups, all smiling and enjoying the opportunity to engage with their surroundings and company. No fishermen or boats were sighted; however a soaring kite was a constant icon above us, and a huge mob of kangaroos were also gathered in close proximity to the group as we trekked along the track.

Within about 2km of the cars, Ken’s influence over the weather lapsed and the drizzle and rain arrived. This did not dampen our enjoyment of the walk, or our satisfaction in completing 15.4km, the group of 8 celebrating with a delicious lunch and hot drinks at Folks Coffee in Wonthaggi.

Many thanks to Ken and Graham for organising a great day out on this very popular walk.
