The organisation what3words Ltd has divided the world up into a 3m x 3m grid and then given each grid a 3 word label or address, so for example, the place at Koonwara where we meet and park our cars before setting off on our walk or bike ride has the label ‘phosphorus.evilly.peroxide’, compared with 38°32'50.9"S 145°56'50.7"E (or perhaps -38.547472, 145.947423) as a grid reference, and you can use the free app to either find the location or, if at the location, find the 3 word label or address. Why? Because it is much more accurate and reliable than using the gps in your phone and then telling someone (eg the emergency service operator) your grid reference location, which is typically 16 digits long.

Perhaps we should consider using it to specify meeting places etc when we organise activities. Have a look on the web at what3words.com for a much better explanation than I’ve provided. Comments welcome.Clive
