On Thursday 20th March,  13 of us boarded the Brianna Lee for the Wilsons Prom cruise.

We had morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea.

Leaving Port Welshpool the water was like a mill pond, past the long-restored  jetty, yellow markers showing

how much longer the original jetty was.

Wilderness Cruise Smooth as a Pond Wilderness Cruise Refuge Cove

The captain gave very informative comments on the places we passed.  Including Refuge Cove, the Lighthouse and the most southern point on mainland Australia

Wilderness Cruise Lighthouse Wilderness Cruise Most Southern Point

We had morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea. The crew were very cheerful and looked after us well.

We saw lots of New Zealand fur seals, and dolphins racing/riding the boat's bow wave.

Wilderness Cruise New Zealand Fur Seals Wilderness Cruise Skull Rock

At Skull rock we were informed that cannon balls had been found in the 'eye socket'; And they were Portuguese not British.

Then to our complete surprise a single juvenile hump-back whale appeared. I am sure he played to the audience, slapping his tail propelling itself into the air and having a jolly good time.

At Refuge Cove we had a choice of going for a swim, snorkelling or walking.

Some of us took a short walk up a hill which gave us a nice view over the Cove and admired the expensive boats below. We were just about to go back to the Brianna Lee when the heavens opened and we got very wet.

Luckily we had a change of clothes.

Wilderness Cruise Its Getting Rough

On the return to Welshpool the sea became quite rough.

PS insect repellent containing Deet is not allowed on board and if you want to swim, suntan lotion needs to be environmentally (fish) friendly.

To end the day we had dinner at the Port Welshpool Pub. A good time was had by all.

Ilse Arndt.
