On Friday 17th January, 11 paddlers from SGWAAC and the Strezlecki Bushwalking Club met at the Albert River boat ramp car park on the South Gippsland Highway near Alberton for a combined paddle  - a great rollup for our first paddle of the New Year.

At briefing we were reminded that the tide and wind conditions were not ideal, in other words we were paddling on a falling tide and into a Westerly wind, ho hum!   Fortunately the forecast did not hold true and we enjoyed a gentle breeze and minimal tidal drag on the return trip.

With everyone in the water we set off downstream about 9.00am. The river twists and turns through low lying farmland, with the odd jetty or boat ramp exposed by the falling water. Mangroves and mud line much of the riverbank - not the best for exiting a kayak. We passed the Alberton Cemetery which is one of the oldest and most significant graveyards in our state. Folklore has it that Whalers and Sealers from Bass Strait were buried here long before Port Albert was settled. It was common for burial parties to arrive by boat hence the reason for graves on the riverbank.Albert River lunch stop

Paddling by the clock, after about an hour and a half, it was time to turn around, exposed mud banks revealing how much the tide had fallen. We arrived back at the boat ramp just before midday, in good time to pack up our craft and enjoy a leisurely lunch.  A delightful paddle offering the perfect opportunity to catch up with one another.

Thanks, Roz, for your organization. I’m sure participants will be keen to repeat this paddle in the near future.
