Avenel had hit the jackpot organising both the weather and access to the allusive Heart Morass. It was a perfect day for exploring the expansive waterway.
Our kayaks unloaded and before we launched Gary told us about the Heart Morass Renovation project a unique partnership between hunters, conservationists, government, and local community. In 2006 the area, a riverine wetland, was completely dry having been heavily grazed until then had very little vegetation. Works were undertaken to revive the wetland area, the wildlife and birds have returned to the area.
Once on the water landmarks and boundaries were pointed out to us. As a result of the recent heavy rain, we needed guidance over one of the flooded walking tracks, then we were away weaving in amongst the clumps of reeds and eel grass. After morning tea on the bank near a beautiful old tree we set off in search for the old bridge which eluded us. Next was to find a suitable landing place and solid ground for lunch after which we returned to our launching site. A most enjoyable paddle of about 14kms and one we hope to do again.
Thank you to Gary and Cassie for unlocking the gate, briefing us on the history of Heart Morass and ensuring that we did not lose ourselves amongst the 3000 acres that the Morass covers.
The area having tracks for walking, cycling and several riverside campsites would be suitable for a future short stay base camp.
