Day One.
The sun was shining on the start of a beautiful day at White Woman’s Waterhole where members had gathered for walking and cycling. White Woman’s Waterhole is a free campsite 16.5 kms from Yarram at Won Wron. It is a lovely spot with ample trees, spots for camping and a drop toilet.
The thirteen cyclists gathered for the obligatory photo and we were on our way. Kerry our intrepid leader led us through the bush land, which is very pleasant with tall trees and bird life. Flat at first but then down and up, mostly down the gravel tracks which were rough or sandy in spots and we had to concentrate to stay on the bike. Then BLISS!, we crossed the South Gippsland Highway onto Woranga Rd which was SEALED. Turning right onto Pound Rd E a head wind hit us all the way to where we joined the Rail Trail where we turned right again and it was behind us, but the trail was fairly sheltered with trees growing both sides. The Yarram Bakery beckoned for a welcome stop for lunch.
Twelve riders left to ride back to the campsite, the weather had changed, they had a strong tail wind and a smattering of rain on the return trip. This scribe decided to stay in Yarram to wander around the murals, however the wind was so strong I couldn’t keep the map in control, so I rode to Alberton on the rail trail. About 46 kilometres.
Day Two.
Five of us had stayed in Yarram overnight and we rode to the meeting place at Alberton, Pat followed at a distance. Mary-Anne had joined us, Julie and Alan had left us, and a couple of others didn’t ride, so there were 10 riders today. The weather ended up a very pleasant 20 degrees and not much wind.
The Tarra Trail is still being developed and some spots were soft deep loose gravel, again concentration was needed to stay on the bike. A small amount of blood was shed. Kerry took us into the Port Albert Racecourse and Recreation Reserve, this is a large area where free camping is allowed, however there appeared to be horses around so we didn’t ride around the course. We continued into Port Albert where we met up with Meg and David and had a coffee. It was very pleasant sitting in the sun drinking our coffee and looking over the water and boats. Port Albert is a delightful little town and well worth a longer visit. Returned to Alberton via the road. About 33 Kilometres travelled today, for the Yarram stayers a bit less for the rest.
A BIG THANKYOU to Kerry for organising the event and getting everyone back safely.
