On January 28th five hardy kayakers met on the bank of the Macalister River above Glenmaggie. With plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen on board we paddled off towards the Paradise Valley campground.

The water has dropped around 5’ since Pat had last paddled there so she was unsure if we’d be able to make it to our destination.

Despite the forecast it was perfect paddling weather; didn’t feel too hot on the river and a light breeze. There were only a few powerboats and jet skis on the river and they slowed when they saw us. Lots of water dragons stunning themselves on the rocks.

We stopped and swam whenever we felt the need…. It was as good in the water as it was on it!

We thought our paddle had finished when we got to some rapids and very shallow water. Shane took the lead and towed his kayak behind him to a point where the river became navigable again. Once he was through the rest of us followed, although Josie had to be a bit more protective of her kayak’s bottom so as not to damage it on the rocks.

We were able to make it to Paradise Valley where we turned around and headed back downstream. We stopped for lunch and another swim (or two). The plastic fantastics were able to be paddled through the rapids, once again Josie walked her kayak through.

The wind began to pick up a bit as we neared our journey’s end, but it wasn’t too strong and on the whole was a tail wind so it assisted the homeward paddle.

It was a lovely few hours on the river. Thanks to Pat for leading the paddle, and to Roz, Josie and Shane for the fabulous company.
