Looks can be deceiving. Looking at Cowwarr Weir today, it's hard to believe that in June 430 cubic meters of timber came down the Thompson River and destroyed this whole area. Thanks to an amazing effort from Southern Rural Water the weir is looking a picture.

Another glorious Gippsland day greets a different group of eager paddlers. Distance does not deter us, as we come from near and far, to share and gain experience on the peaceful waters of Cowwarr Weir. Whilst I'm sure that many are nervous, we are all soon put at ease as Avenel, Pat and Roz welcome us all, and as our naming circle forms strangers become new friends.

As always, safety is a priority and Avenel smoothly shifts through the gears of water safety before our journey can begin. Now all safely in our crafts we head off on our little adventure along the slowly rippling waters of the Thompson River. As we navigate our way along the river, we are all experiencing something different, a new place, a different boat, a new friend, but as we paddle along we are all sharing the same moment on the water. Snack and chat is always a highlight of our little jaunts with a quick pull in on a quiet shoulder of the river, it is always enjoyed before we turn and meander back to the weir.

Paddling Cowarr Weir 2

Our day rounds out with a test and try of all boats, which proves to be an interesting exercise. Various opinions are shared and much discussion is held over the pros and cons of all craft on offer. We all agree that our choice of craft can and will be very different based on our individual needs.

Thankyous and goodbyes dispensed, we all depart our day and make our way home with plans of our next adventure already paddling through our heads.
