We welcomed a new paddler today, Janene had driven all the way from Skye to join us.
First task is to get boats off or out of cars, an interesting exercise which provides lots of opportunity for sharing new ideas.
With boats set up time was spent demonstrating and practicing entry and exiting kayaks onto the bank. This is a handy skill for days when we are in deep water or need to exit onto a pontoon.
Once on the water we practiced paddling strokes, then it was full steam ahead up the Thomson River. This is a beautiful stretch of water, crystal clear, exposing pebbles, logs and the odd fish. Normally we see water dragons sunning themselves on rocks and logs, not today. Megan decided we were paddling far too fast to see wildlife!
We did have a close encounter with two juvenile white faced herons, perched on low lying branches as if they had no where to escape.
Back at base, Avenel demonstrated the difficulties of towing, then we did a couple of rescues. It was great to see participants practicing tipping over and re entry skills. A work in progress for all of us.
Our day ended with snacks and lunch under the shade of beautiful old trees,
Many thanks to Avenel for sharing her time and skills with us all.
