Grampians - Southern Sections of the GPT
In March this year, John and I completed the Grampians Peak Trail. I had promised to lead a base camp for those who could not attend and have planned this for the week of 24 March 2025. The plan is to stay at the Lakeside Caravan Park. I shall make a booking for John and myself, but note that we are from SGWAAC hoping to get a special rate. Further details will be advised closer to the time.
Monday, 24 March
Arrival throughout the afternoon. Those who arrive earlier, we can do an afternoon walk.
Options on arrival day are:
- Fyans Creek Circuit – Easy - goes through Halls Gap – can stop at the Brewery for a quick “Happy Hour”
- Pinnacle Loop from Sundial carpark – 4.2kms return – medium – out of town
- Venus Baths – 2.5km circuit - easy
- Teddy Bear Gap Loop – 7.0kms – it is a bit out of town – would need to drive there….
Tuesday, 25 March
Griffin Trailhead to Cassidy Gap Road – Medium - Grade 4 - 11.9kms
This is an easy section of the GPT, but we climb up to 670m (seems to be standard). Some occasional rock step sections with great views.
Wednesday, 26 March
Cassidy Gap Road to Signal Peak and Mt Abrupt returning to Mt Abrupt carpark – Medium - Grade 4 – 7 kms (slow)
Thursday, 27 March
Picanniny carpark to Mt Sturgeon carpark – Medium – Grade 4 – 10kms (slow)
Friday, 28 March
Return home.
Other walk options are:
Redman Road to Mt William carpark – Seven Dials – Hard – Grade 4-5 – 8-9 hours – 13kms
This walk is easy to start with, but it becomes a very hard day. You will be ascending some of the highest and most rugged sections of the GPT. The views are to die for. This walk needs to be started early and we all have to feel very well.
Jimmy Creek to Yarram Gap Road – Hard - Grade 4 – 11kms
This walk is undulating with some lovely views over the Serra Range. There is one section with some scree….. the rest is OK, not too hard. Yarram Gap camp for am tea or lunch is lovely. Some sections are quite steep, but the walk finishes on an undulating track with good views to the south.
Please note that with all of these long day hikes we need to do a car shuffle.
